Tried to snap swallows chasing insects this afternoon
I think the swallows that I spotted are violet-green swallow and northern rough-winged swallow. They dart around so fast that I have little chance to find one in my field of view and then have my camera focus on them. I crossed the river this afternoon to check on the red-shouldered hawk pair and to find kestrels. I spotted one of the hawk pair at a nest the other day. The nest looked like it needed refurbishing. I’m wondering if the hawks are staking claim to it. But today I spotted the same pair of hawks in the vicinity of the nest and also spotted a couple crows or ravens at the nest. The crows only stayed a minute. So, with the dilapidated nest and hawks allowing the curious crows a visit, I don’t think there are hawk eggs in the nest. I will keep watching. The nest is a couple of trees over from where kestrels had their nest last year and the hawks are using the same utility pole as the kestrels. The pole is like a stepping stone to the nest and is used as a food relay stop. I have not seen the kestrels, yet this year. The neighborhood could get interesting when the kestrels return.
