Owl and red-tailed hawk pairs
A red-tailed hawk pair was out late and the resident owl pair came out early last evening. The owls met on their utility pole and saw hawks one pole away. It was the second evening that I spotted a hawk out just after sunset, they’re interested in catching prey in a field. Oak trees and utility poles that border a large field are ideal for spotting prey. In the past a tractor was used to mow the field and that process took one or two days to expose the ground. Sheep are in the field now and I think they have been grazing for over a week. Their grazing has gradually exposed the ground and the hawks have been persistently watching for snakes and small mammals since. The owls had switched up their initial meet-up routine and they did not start with egg making last evening. I think the male was more interested in the hawks and when the hen scooted over to him, he kept hooting in the direction of the hawks. The owls eventually flew back to their palm tree. It’s rare when I spot the male in the palm tree. It was a week ago today when they were spotted making eggs, so I’m guessing egg laying is imminent.
